Restoration research
We study the early life cycle of corals, what is needed for breeding different coral species, and how we promote the resilience and survivial of new coral offspring.
"We at SECORE feel a great responsibility and recognize the magnitude of work ahead of us, and with the help of our partners and supporters, I am confident that we can turn the tide for coral reefs. Thank you for believing in our mission!", Dr. Dirk Petersen, SECORE's Executive Director and Founder.
Our holistic restoration approach combines scientific knowledge with engineering thinking, comprehensive mentorships with customized local implementation, and an international network of partners for successful reef enhancement with trans-regional impact.

To meet the challenges of the coral crisis, developing technologies to enable the scaling-up of coral restoration is a key aspect.
Within our Training and Capacity Building Program we accompany our partners on their journey to a sustainable restoration on an impactful scale.
Corals are ecosystem-engineers, building their own habitat. Reefs are one of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems - yet today, corals around the globe are dying at an alarming rate.
The first Coral Breeding Reference Sheets are finally available, consolidating information on four key coral species (Acropora palmata, Orbicella faveolata, Diploria labyrinthiformis, Porites porites). They a valuable resource for all Coral Seeding practitioners.
A peer-reviewed study shows that all our efforts are worthwhile: during the devastating heatwave in the Caribbean in 2023, our young, bred corals on the reef, stayed healthy while most of the remaining wild corals bleached and many died in the aftermath.
Within this new US$1.38 million CORDAP funded restoration project we will be working on optimizing collection of coral spawn, assisted fertilization, mass coral larvae rearing, coral settlement, and improving survival of corals after seeding them on the reef together with FUNDEMAR and Reef Renewal Bonaire.
Meet our Coral Heroes! We created this science comic for kids to learn about the ecology of coral reefs and how to restore them with Coral Seeding. Download our comic to read or print, available in several languages!
“As proud members of SECORE’s Zoo and Aquarium Partnership Program, we are supporting invaluable work that clearly aligns with our mission of research, education, and conservation, “says Mitch Carl, Curator of Aquatics at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and SECORE's supporter for two decades.
